We will be working on our Internet Safety project during class today.  I have new login information for you - please be sure to write this information down!!  You will have to start over with a new video, but you should be ok because you would have only had a maximum of 30 seconds from your last video.

FA2 vocab week 4 software

One note from last week (this will be important as we go forward and continue to work on Formatting Activities) - once you submit a formatting activity and I grade it if you do it correctly you will NOT get an email in return; however, if there is some part of the activity that you do not complete correctly I will be sending you an email with details on what you didnt do correctly.  In most cases you do not need to respond to these emails - I just send them to you so you know why you got the grade you got.  There may be an occasional case where you need to resend me something, and if thats the case Ill mention that in the email.

This is another week of vocabulary, and this weeks vocabulary list is on software.  If you have vocab definitions to complete they should be posted by Tuesday night.

We are going to start today with working on Formatting Activity 2.  When we do these activities they will be embedded on the blog (you can see it below); on most days I will be discussing with you what you need to do to complete the formatting activity correctly, but if I see people working on the assignment while I am talking and explaining how to complete the formatting activity I will be taking 10% off of your grade.  Do not start working on these activities until I tell you to start.

Vocab video complete FA6 missing work Alice

Here is another video for this weeks vocabulary:

STARTING TODAY: ANYONE CAUGHT WITH THEIR SPEED SKIN OFF OF THEIR KEYBOARD WILL LOSE 10% ON THE NEXT ASSIGNMENT.  YOU WILL LOSE 10% EVERY TIME I SEE YOU WITH YOUR SPEED SKIN OFF THE KEYBOARD, SO IT IS POSSIBLE TO LOSE MORE THAN 10% IN ONE ASSIGNMENT.


If you have not yet finished FA6 you will have class time to get that done.  If you are done then you need to finish any missing work that you dont have turned in.  I have not yet graded FA5 so if you did not complete it you need to get it turned in ASAP.  If you dont have any missing work then you need to complete the Alice tutorial from Monday - here is the website again:

Vocab quiz 3 Caps Lock key Question Mark key and Tab key

Today we will review at the beginning of the hour for vocab quiz #3.

After the quiz, if you did not finish yesterdays assignment you need to complete it and send it to me.

If you are done with both please open Microsoft Word and turn to page 17.  Youll need to type lines 1-3 on 8B using the Caps Lock key (L4) once; after you complete those lines you need to complete lines 4-6 once on 8B - here you will learn the question mark key (Left Shift + R4).

Once you have completed the above lines go to 8C and complete each of those lines once.  In this section you will learn to use the TAB key (L4) - a TAB allows you to move your cursor to a preset position on the line of writing.  For you, as you will see when you type these lines, the preset position is 1/2" from the left margin.

After completing all of these lines raise your hand and I will come and check your work.  Then you may go to any of the practice sites listed on the Website Resources page of the blog.  Make sure to work with your speed skin on your keyboard for the entire hour!

Finish FA7 vocab definition reminder

Today you will have the hour to complete FA7.  Make sure to follow the instructions correctly as you complete the assignment.

I also wanted to remind you to post your definitions (if you have any) on the wikispaces page for Week 9 or Week 10.  Week 9 definitions are not due until next Tuesday (Apr. 29) and week 10 definitions are not due until the following Tuesday - May 6.

If you complete the formatting activity in class today and you have a missing assignment you need to get your missing work done and handed in for a grade.  If you are all done with everything you may go to the practice websites.

Vocab quiz 5 create a blog

Today we will be taking vocab quiz #5.

After taking the quiz everyone will be creating a blog at Blogger.  This is the same host site that I have used to create the class blog.  The sign up process will be simple because Blogger is a "sister" site to Google - you can use your Google account to log into your Blogger blog.

We will take some time today to create your blog - if we have time available we will be embedding your videos onto your blog.  At some point (either today or Monday) you will be sending me an email with a link to your blog so I can view your video(s) and grade them.

Today we have our second vocab quiz.  Just like last week we will take the first few minutes to review and then we will be heading to Classmarker to complete the quiz.  DO NOT GO TO CLASSMARKER UNTIL I GIVE YOU THE OK!

After completing the quiz we will be learning the M (R1) and the X (L3).

Vocab Quiz 1 learn B and Y

We will take the first few minutes to review for the vocab quiz.  After looking over the words on your wikispaces page we will go to Classmarker to take the quiz.  You shouldnt be on Classmarker until I tell you to go there!

Once you are completed with the quiz you will need to open Microsoft Word and turn to page 11.  You need to type lines 1-10 in section 5C.

Once we get done with section 5C we will move to page 12 and learn the B (L1) and the Y (R1).

Vocab quiz 6 finish FA6 bracket competition

You will have a few minutes at the beginning of the hour to review; Ill let you know when its time to go to Classmarker to take the quiz.

When you get done with the quiz you need to finish FA6 and hand it in.

If you are done with FA6 and the person you are to compete against is done with FA6 you will have a race on the Typeracer website.  It is not a guarantee that all people will be competing in Typeracer today.

If you have completed everything you can bring something to work on from another class, read, or play on the practice websites.

Vocab quiz 7 Formatting activity 5

We have vocab quiz #7 that we will be taking after using the first few minutes of class to review.  

Once you are done with the quiz you need to start working on Formatting Activity #5.  This actually comes in the form of a handout - it will not be embedded on the blog.  FA5 will be due by the end of the hour on Monday, so you will have time today and Monday to work on this assignment.

Vocab quiz 3

You will have a short amount of time at the beginning of class to review for the vocab quiz - youll need to go to the Wikispaces page to review.  If you dont know your password I dont have it - youll have to create a new password on the website.

After completing the quiz you will need to turn to page 18 in your book and learn three new keys.  The apostrophe is keyed with your right little finger (R4) and is the key between the semicolon and the return key; the hyphen is keyed with your right little finger (R4) and is the key to the right of the zero; and the quotation marks are keyed with your left shift key and right little finger (Left Shift + R4) and is located on the apostrophe key between the semicolon and the return key.  On page 18, Lesson 8D, type lines 1-9 twice each.

Once you get done with these lines raise your hand and I will come look at what you have done.  Once I have seen that you have completed these lines you can go to any of the practice websites and play the keying games.

Vocab definitions due Alice missing work

A reminder to those who have vocab definitions due for week 8 - those need to be completed on the Wiki spaces page by tonight.

KEEP YOUR SPEED SKIN ON YOUR KEYBOARD AT ALL TIMES!

For those students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd hours you will need to finish FA5 during class today.  When you are done it should be printed, signed, and then handed in.  

If you complete FA5, or you are already done with FA5, you need to then work on the tutorial in Alice - it can be located here:  http://www.cs.duke.edu/csed/alice09/tutorialsAlice3/gettingStartedTutorials/witchCauldron/witchTutorial.pdf

To open Alice, go to your Finder menu (thats the square "smiley face" on the dock).  Click on Applications, then find a folder labeled "Alice3".  Open that folder and inside you will find an icon of Alice - double click on it to open the program.

If you complete the Alice tutorial then you can either work on a missing assignment for Computer Applications, or on the practice websites located on the blog.

Week 3 vocab learn P and V

This is another week with vocabulary, so those people who are responsible for posting definitions on the Wiki spaces website should have that done by Tuesday night.  Again, it is completely realistic to post definitions for all of your words for the rest of the semester, and if you want to get all of yours done tonight that would be perfectly ok.  You dont have to wait until the week your definitions are due to post the definitions - you can post them early.

We will have another week of technique grades this week as well - continue to concentrate on the little things as this will have a lasting impact on how well you key and how fast you improve.  I have been very pleased with Congos work on technique - an overwhelming majority of you do a fantastic job of listening and doing what is asked (in terms of technique) and it is paying off!

Today we are going to learn the P (R4) and the V (L1).  After these two letters we are left with only the Z and the Q (in terms of letters) to learn.

Vocab Quiz 2 Hardware 2 Formatting Activity 1

Youll be given a few minutes at the beginning of class to review for the quiz - youll want to go to your Wikispaces page to do that.  Do NOT go to Classmarker until asked to do so.  As a reminder, make sure to submit your quiz answers - failure to do so will mean that you will have to come back and retake the quiz.

When you are done you will need to complete Formatting Activity 1, which is embedded below.  The instructions are given here - follow the instructions in order.  However, instead of completing steps 7 and 8 what you need to do is save your file to a flash drive. We will cover how to complete step 8 on Monday.  IF YOU DO NOT SAVE YOUR DOCUMENT TO YOUR FLASH DRIVE IT WILL BE ERASED AND YOU WILL HAVE TO START OVER NEXT WEEK!!!

Finish FA5 Alice tutorial Witch vocab week 8

Today you need to finish FA5 and hand it in - it is due before the end of the hour.  The instructions are still on last Fridays blog post if you need them.

Once you get done with FA5 you need to complete the Alice tutorial at the following website.  You should have already worked in Alice, but its been quite a while.  Therefore, go to the following website and complete the tutorial - this will help you in re-learning how Alice works.

Learn Z and colon left shift R4 vocab definitions due tonight!

If you have not completed FA1 and emailed it to me then you need to get that done ASAP at the beginning of class.  If you have already completed FA1 and it has been emailed to me then you need to go to the Free Typing Game website and complete a couple of the speed tests.  Choose test #8.  These do not need to be written on the poster on the wall - just practice to see how well you can do.

Today we will learn the last letter (yay!) on the keyboard - the Z (L4); in addition we will also be learning the colon (Left Shift + R4).

Before you begin working in Word to finish FA4 we are going to cover some of what is on the vocab list for this week.  All of this weeks words are related to the Internet in some way.

What is a .edu website and what does .edu stand for?

What is a .net website and what does .net stand for?

What other top level domain names can you think of that were not included on the vocab list for this week?  I have several and will be sharing those with you in class.  See how many you can get!

Once we get done discussing the top level domains (or TLDs as they are commonly referred to) we will get back to business and complete FA4 - it should be completed by the end of class today and submitted to me.

Finish FA8 vocab definitions missing assignments

Today you need to finish FA8 in class and submit it for a grade.

Once you are done if you have any missing assignments those should be completed and submitted also.

If you have vocab definitions to do for either Week 9 (next week) or Week 10 you may use this time to get those done.

If you are all caught up you have several choices - work on any homework from another class, go to the practice websites, or read a book.
